This morning out my living room window, I heard the sweetest sound. I grabbed my camera but it flew away as soon as I opened the door, it probably didn't help that two doors down there is a new house being built and they also had started pounding away with their hammers. I did capture him/her on top of my neighbors house though-not a great picture, but I got it.
A red breasted robin. This is how I know spring is officially around the corner. It won't be long and I will find that sweet nest, and hear even more sweet sounds. Did you know that there is a Legend of the Easter Robin? I didn't, until I was asked to review The Legend of the Easter Robin: An Easter Story of Compassion and Faith by Dandi Daley Mackall. The legend of the robin's breast is an old Pennsylvania Dutch tale. The point of the legend is a celebration of the robin's compassion and of Christ's sacrifice.
Take a look at this video.
Wow, huh? The story is so sweet and the pages are beautifully illustrated in this hard back book. I read it by myself first and I will be honest, I had a few tears flowing. Then when Miss K got home- she just turned 9, I had her read it aloud. We love adding books like this to our library. And this one was a bonus, because even I learned something new.
One of my readers is going to be blessed with their very own hardback copy of this book. The only required entry for this is to tell me who you will share this book with. Bonus entries are available!
About the book:
In the center of the nest lay one perfect egg, the color of a spring sky. The father robin sat on a branch nearby, guarding his family. Tressa spotted raccoon tracks below and a blue jay eyeing the nest. “Gran, how are we going to keep the egg safe?” “We’ll have to leave that one to the Creator,” Gran said. Robins have built a nest on the window ledge at Grandmother’s house! Tressa is thrilled―and concerned. What will happen to the sky-blue egg laid by the mother robin? As more eggs appear, Tressa witnesses the daily drama of the robins’ nest and learns how God cares for all creatures. Besides watching the birds, there are Easter eggs to color. And there is a very special story to hear―a tale of long ago about one small bird with a very big heart. How did the robin get its red breast? Tressa is about to find out as Gran tells her the story of the Easter robin. Brought to life with colorful, tender illustrations, The Legend of the Easter Robin will captivate and teach your child about compassion and faith.
